Introduction
Game Overview
Gin Rummy is an immensely popular two-player card game. It belongs to the traditional Rummy family but is characterized by its faster pace and deeper strategy. The objective is to form your hand into sets and runs to minimize the point value of your "deadwood," ultimately aiming to "knock" before your opponent with a lower deadwood total.
Objective of the Game
To arrange all 10 cards in your hand into sets and runs, thereby minimizing the total point value of your unmatched cards ("deadwood"). You win a hand by being the first to "knock," demonstrating that your deadwood total is lower than your opponent's, or by achieving "Gin."
Equipment
- Deck: One standard 52-card deck. Aces are always low (worth 1 point).
- Players: 2 players.
Basic Rules & Gameplay
The Deal: Each player is dealt 10 cards. The remaining cards are placed face-down in the center as the stock pile. The top card of the stock is turned face-up to start the discard pile.
Turn Sequence:
- Draw: At the start of your turn, you must draw one card—either the top card from the stock pile or the top card from the discard pile.
- Discard: At the end of your turn, you must select one card from your hand and discard it face-up onto the discard pile.
Forming Melds:
- Set: Three or four cards of the same rank (e.g., three Queens).
- Run: Three or more consecutive cards of the same suit (e.g., 5-6-7 of Diamonds).
Winning the Hand ("Knocking"): When you believe the total point value of your deadwood is low enough (10 points or less), you can end the round by "knocking."
- You reveal your entire hand, placing your valid sets and runs separately, and announce your deadwood point total.
- Your opponent then reveals their hand. They are allowed to "lay off" any of their deadwood cards onto your melds if those cards can extend them (e.g., adding a fourth Queen to your set of three, or a 8 of Diamonds to your 5-6-7 run). These laid-off cards no longer count as their deadwood.
- Comparing Scores:
- If your deadwood total is lower than your opponent's, you win the hand. You score the difference between the two totals.
- If your deadwood total is equal to or higher than your opponent's, you have been "undercut." Your opponent wins the hand, scores a 25-point bonus, plus the difference in points (if any).
Special Win: Gin If you can form all 10 cards in your hand into sets and runs, leaving no deadwood (0 points), you can declare "Gin." You immediately win the hand. You score a 25-point bonus plus the total point value of your opponent's deadwood (and your opponent is not allowed to lay off any cards).
Scoring
- Card Points: Ace=1 point, number cards 2-9=face value, Jack/Queen/King=10 points.
- Hand Scoring:
- Normal Win:
(Opponent's deadwood total - Winner's deadwood total). - Gin Bonus: Extra 25 points + opponent's full deadwood total. No lay-offs permitted.
- Undercut Penalty: Undercutting player wins, scores 25 points +
(Knocker's deadwood total - Winner's deadwood total).
- Normal Win:
- Game Scoring: Play is typically over multiple hands. The first player to reach 100 points (or an agreed-upon total) wins the entire game. The winner of each hand also usually receives a 20-point "line bonus" or "box bonus."
